Melk Abbey Shop

Specialized literature, gifts & specialties from the monastery & the region

On the ground floor of the Northern bastion, visitors may find a gift shop with many exclusive abbey products.

Products include not only the traditional souvenirs which are usually purchased by travelers from all over the world, but also specialized literature about Melk abbey, Saint Coloman, the Baroque age, faith and religion.

From herbs harvested in the “Paradise Garden”, which has been planted in the abbey park according to guidelines written down by the Benedictine abbot Walafrid Strabo in the 9th century, the monastery of Gut Aich (in St. Gilgen by Lake Wolfgang) produces special herb liqueurs, a refreshment for both body and soul.

For 35 years the renowned Jamek winery in Joching has leased all of Melk abbey’s vineyards situated in the Wachau region, whereas the monastery’s vineyards situated in the Gumpoldskirchen area have been leased to the Johanneshof Reinisch winery for a few years. Wines produced by both wineries are available in the abbey shop.

In Melk, the “gateway to the Wachau”, it is imperative to offer exquisite local apricot products such as jams, brandies, and liqueurs. They are produced by Gerti and Gerhard Tastl in Rohrendorf with apricots from Melk abbey’s orchards.

Guests with a sweet tooth can find special chocolates refined with ingredients harvested in the  monastery’s forests or gardens: the confectioner Hagmann in Krems exclusively creates hand-made chocolate for the abbey’s shop in the varieties: cornel cherry-egg liqueur, apricot, and strawberry-white chocolate.
