ABBEY VISIT (daily):

Imperial Staircase | Imperial Corridor | Abbey museum | Marble Hall | Balcony | Library | Abbey church
The monastery as a vibrant place with more than 1000 years of tradition is the focus of the abbey visit.
Since 1089, Benedictine monks have continually been living and working in Melk Abbey. Following the rules laid down by St. Benedict, they try to translate into action the words ORA et LABORA et LEGE (pray and work and learn) by working in pastoral care and education as well as organizing cultural events.
The abbey museum shows the abbey’s historical significance, art treasures and its current tasks. The marble hall, the abbey library and, as a highlight, the abbey church make the Baroque era come alive in an impressive way.

NORTHERN BASTION / WACHAU LAB

The Northern Bastion, a historic building from the Baroque age, has been enhanced with contemporary architectural elements and is now open for visitors. On the ground floor, visitors can get many exclusive products, available only in this spacious gift shop of the abbey. The exhibition space on the first floor accommodates the “Wachau Lab”, where the students of the Melk abbey school conceive and organize changing special exhibitions. From the panoramic terrace on the second floor, guests can see the abbey park and the Baroque garden pavilion, the Eastern façade of Melk abbey and the surrounding areas.

daily | 9.00 am to 5.30 pm (April – October) / 9.30 am to 5.00 pm (November – March)

ABBEY PARK AND BAROQUE PAVILION (April - October)

Before or after the abbey visit the abbey park invites you to linger. The Baroque garden pavilion with exotic frescoes, the “Paradise Garden”, the Jardin Méditerranéen, the Jardin Oriental, the thought-provoking “St. Benedict’s Path”,the “Talking Stones”, the campfire circle, the historical water basin, 250-year-old linden trees and many more accents wait to be discovered.

daily | April-October | 9.00 am to 6.00 pm (last exit)
